Neighborhood: Brooklyn/Columbia Street Waterfront DistrictIn the ~100 reviews I've posted, I've accorded five-star treatment sparingly. Here's a deserving candidate. Start with the vegetarian curry pie and work your way through the DUB oeuvre from there. I am. At $5 a pop, it rates as pricey for the size but in oenophile terms, the QPR is sensational. And I don't hail from a meat pie native clime such as Oceania, either.

i cannot believe i missed first to review on dub pies! ive been eating dub pies for like eva. okay, maybe only a year but good on you jeff m. for beating me to the punch. okay, dub pies are super duper quick, filling, delicious and cheap. the people who work there are all mega-friendly australians and when you order delivery, it is a pleasure to get to chat with them. the curry vegetarian pie is wonderfully flavored and the shepherds pie with its perfectly browned swirled mashed potato top is the ultimate comfort food. you can also order their pies in bulk to keep your freezer stocked. highly recommended for midnight snacking emergencies.

Haha I love it "Ethnic Food" - yeah rock on, this place is my soul-food as a New Zealander stranded in New York.
The pies are what a Kiwi pie should be, packed with tasty fresh meat (yeah man I saw you cutting it up out the back while I was munching away - this stuff is FRESH), a little gravy, all in a pastry pack and perfectly baked.
Don't be fooled that its all about pies. For drinks you have to go for either the Flat White (NZ version of a latte / cappucino) or Milo (the chocolate drink my granny promised would put hair on my chest - and hey! it did!). You will need these tasty drinks to wash down the Lammington desert (sponge cake squares rolled in a chocolate fudgey goo, then rolled in coconut, split open and dobbed with cream).
Finally the dudes are friendly, there is Kiwi tack'a'rama on the walls. You will love it.

After tons of recommendations we finally were able to get to Dub Pies- food wise we were happy as can be. The pies are super tasty and quite addictive. The service however...left a LOT to be desired. Not sure what was happening over there but we were met by an incredibly unhappy and surly tall blond haired woman who seemed to be hell-bent on making sure we were uncomfortable. When we ordered a salad off the menu she simply said 'We can't do that'. Um, what? No explanation. Totally bizarre. When we asked for a napkin (pies are good and squishy) she said 'I don' know if I have any'. You gotta be kidding!
Hey Dub- get some better counter help! It really sort of ruined what could have been a great little snack stop.

I was craving pie.
I would only go here if that is the case. Aside from the pies, it doesn't have much else going for it.
We walked in, and this guy sitting at a table in the window walked over to the counter to take our orders. I thought he was just another patron and got slightly confused when he stood behind the cash register.
I ordered Dub Plate 2, which at 9.50, isn't much of a bargain.
It consists of one pie of your choice, and obviously bought in salad. He didn't even give me salad dressing for my ceaser salad. I had to ask for it, and he seemed very surprised at such a request. All that aside. The pie was delicious. I ordered the vegetarian curry one. It was just what I needed. A little slice of NZ right in Brooklyn. The place itself was hot, and sort of dirty. The tables were covered with paper stamped with the DUB logo. Very unhygenic. It didn't look like they'd been changed in days.
Basically put. It's good for pies, not much else, and always always get it to go.
3 stars - but only for it's rarity, and for it's pies.
I really can't stop talking or thinking about this place. I moved into the neighborhood a month ago and have been going here many times a week. The pies are my benchmark for meat pies. I will go through life comparing the pies I eat to the pies I started with at DUB. The staff is friendly and don't seem to mind if you use the wireless for hours on end. So long, of course, as you keep buying delicious food from them.
The dessert pies are small, but quite a delight. I would also recommend trying the pie and soup combo. And the breakfast pie. And the curry vegetable pie. And the mince pie.
Read about this place. Went last winter, was the only one in there (cause of the weather). Ah had the chicken veg pie, MMMgood (sorry Campbell's) with some taters and salad, salad was good. The pie was the best part. Also shared a spinach one, I don't like spinach but it wasn't bad. The Curry veg is verry good. What's good about the pies, is by themselves they are a good little snack/meal.
I liked them so much I bought 12 more to go, and they are frozen, heating them is easy (recommended to "defrost" in refrigerator overnight). Over time I ate them as I pleased, very enjoyable, didn't have that fake frozen food taste either. I need more now, gonna head there soon.
They also can deliver them to your job, I didn't try this yet, but they mentioned the option of an oven being loaned-- HOT!!
Definitely check these guys out...

Picture it -- Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, 2007. A cold April night. Seven of us bathing in the warm glow of American Idol, season 6, final 8, Jennifer Lopez.
Chinese? Pizza? Thai? Burgers? Sushi? The delivery options swirled around us like the snow flurries outside. The DUB Pies menu entered the fray... Game over!
Delicious meat pies! Shepherd's pie! Mincemeat! Chicken and veggies! Steak and cheese! Curry vegetarian!
Single-serving "Australian, New Zealand-style gourmet meat & vegetarian pies" are $4-5. A pie and a side salad is a meal, or perhaps two pies. I learned from the web site that pies are available frozen for later, too. Reminds me of Peasant Pies in Noe Valley in San Francisco.
I've had only delivery (limited even within Brooklyn), but the pie cafe is called Let them Eat Pie.
Would be five stars if the delivery radius was larger (Manhattan).

For a while, I was literally eating here everyday. Bacon egg and cheese pies for breakfast, chicken pies for lunch, steak and mushroom pies for dinner. I watched the World Cup on the big ol' TV. Dragged the band over in the middle of the night during a recording session; we came for the wireless internet, but we left full of delicate crust, tender meat, and thick, delicious gravy. I think you can hear it in the vocals.
My only complaint is that the fillings have occasionally been a little on the dry side. This is usually not the case, however, and might be a matter of slow turn-over from the heater. So please go, eat lots, and make sure that they stay fresh (save a chicken pie for me, though, it's my favorite).
